The Department of Public Health is under the School of Health Sciences and situated at Kapkatet Campus, along Kericho-Sotik road. The vision is to be a leading department in producing innovative and skilful public health officers, nutritionists, dieticians and global public health specialists to meet the needs of the dynamic world. Our departmental mission is to create, preserve and transfer knowledge, and technology appropriate for public health, nutrition, dietetics and global health practice through teaching, research and ccommunity and preventive medicine practice for the betterment of humanity.

The Department of Public Health aims to produce graduates who:

  1. • are ready to apply knowledgeable to solve public health issues from community to international levels.
  2. • develop research and innovation skills to solve emerging and remerging issues in Public Health issues community to international levels.
  3. • conduct sound health needs assessment and design accurate and timely interventions towards promoting health , prolonging life and preventing diseases.

Student Opportunities

Students in the Department of Public Health have various opportunities to acquire essential skills and practical experience. These include:

  1. Public Health Skills Lab- to expose our students to various public health areas like occupational health and safety, food safety, pathology and meat inspection.
  2. Mortuary, Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory: Hands-on training in anatomical and physiological concepts.
  3. Basic Sciences labs: for Chemistry and Physics as well as Biochemistry, Microbiology and Parasitology Labs.
  4. Community-Based Extension Service (COBES): Rural and urban exposure at third and fourth year respectively.
  5. Field exposure to industry, School and Hospital health education and promotion activities, water treatment plants, food processing plants towards gaining hands on experience.
  6. Public Health Law field exposure at Law courts
  7. Urban Health Experience: Exposure to healthcare delivery at the county level.
  8. Community and research outreach Health Trips: Field trips focusing on community health initiatives.
  9. Field exposure to the HANDS-JICA exposure on community nutrition, play circle program

The Department of Public Health offers one degree program:

  1. 1. Bachelor of Science in Public Health: This program runs for duration of four years. Upgraders are also incorporated within the curriculum and it will take them three years to complete.

During the first year of training, the first year students will be indexed by the Public Health and Technicians Council (PHOTC). The Public Health graduates will then proceed for PHOTC council exam using their index numbers and thereafter proceed for a one year internship under the guidance of PHOTC. After a satisfactory internship period, the licenses will be applied for by individuals ready to practice as Public Health Officers.

Masters in Global Public Health-Commencing any month within AY 24/25.
